No decision yet on timing of further lottery sports grants

Mayo Deputy Michael Ring has this week in the Dáil questioned the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism on the availability of the Sports Capital Programme for 2009.

Under the national lottery-funded Sports Capital Programme, funding is allocated to sporting and community organisations at local, regional and national level throughout the country. The aim of the programme is to maximise participation in sport through the provision of modern high-quality, safe, well-designed and sustainable facilities and sports equipment. The provision of such facilities allows for increased numbers to participate in sport.

Minister Cullen indicated that no decision has yet been made about the timing of further rounds of the programme.

Deputy Ring said he was anxious that people who have entered into commitments for long-term capital projects such as football pitches, club houses, etc. would be given the opportunity to apply for this funding in 2009.

“A lot of those people are waiting for the grants to be announced for 2009 and for the application forms to become available. I am anxious to find out when this will happen,” concluded Dep Ring.
