Balla
Last weekend’s competition sponsored by Fragile, Castlebar was won by Paraic Cuffe on 39pts, with Ray Mannion coming home in second place and Tim Evans in third. The ladies competition was won by Pat Dillon with Carmel Costello second and Breda Cleary third. The Broderick Cup was won by Seamus and Enda Holian, and James and Mary Lavin came second.
Ballina
In Wednesday’s 18 hole open stableford competition, Ray McNamara sr was the winner on 37pts with Sean O’Brien second and Cian Gilmartin third. The weekend competition, sponsored by The Korner Shop, was won by John Fox with Noel Dee second and Paul Moran third.
Ballinrobe
The Doris and Len Jones sponsored competition was won by Marian Walsh on 69pts, with Marian Scully second, Brid de Barra third and Maura Joyce the gross winner. Mary Nalty was the best over the first nine with Angle Flaherty taking the back nine prize.
Castlebar
There was a great buzz of expectation around Castlebar Golf Club last Saturday as the 99 golfers who qualified for the final of Henry Horkan's Captain’s Prize set off in search of the coveted prize. The early golfers had to contend with blustery conditions and the rain came in as the final group started the back nine.
Eamon Mongan emerged at the end of the day as the winner with a great score of 137 nett. Mongan eagled the par five third hole and made another eagle on the par five 11th hole to follow his birdie on the seventh. He finished his second round with a 69 nett and on this form it would have been hard to beat him.
The first round leaders of Stephen Munnelly and Jim Mc Govern were not found wanting and put up a serious challenge. Munnelly had a great birdie on the par three 16th, showing the gathering clubhouse audience he was in serious contention. However, as the damp evening settled in, competitors found the 17th and 18th harder than usual and Mongan’s early scoring helped him home to win the prestigious prize.
Ian Brennan sustained a late challenge, with a great up and down on the 18th to eventually secure second place with 138 nett. Stephen Munnelly, also on 138, came in third, and Paul Kilcourse, who was the clubhouse leader for some time, was fourth with a score of 141, the same score as Jim Mc Govern in fifth place. Declan Loftus won the Gross with 145. Gerry Needham was the winner of the past captain’s prize with a score of 148, while Ryan Gibbons was the junior winner with Peter Walsh coming second.
Sunday also saw a 18 hole stableford competition sponsored by Conway Motors, which was won by Tom Good, with Ian Smith second and John O’Brien third. The ladies’ competition on the day was won by Pauline O’Donohue, with Christine Gordon finishing second, Ger Lyons third, and Mary Fox fourth. The junior prize was claimed by Feidhlim Ralph.
Claremorris
Andrew Finn with a score of 41pts was the winner of the Griffith’s Garage sponsored competition, Niall McCarthy finished second with Owen Hannon taking third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Mary Walsh on 39pts with Catherine McEveney finishing in second.
Mulranny
Achill took full advantage of home venue to open up a 21 points lead after round one of the Grainne Uaile triangular golf competition. They scored a total of 284pts. Mulranny lie second on 263pts with the holders, Belmullet on 257pts. Mulranny's best performers were Declan Nevin and Colm O'Neill who shot 49pts, and Noel O'Malley and Ger Staunton with 46pts. Mulranny will host round two on Sunday next. Consequently the course will be closed until 4pm.
Westport
Next Sunday will be the final qualifying event in the 2012 Westport Golf Club Golfer of the Year competition. There will be double points available for the top 30 finishers, and following the distribution of these points, the top 12 golfers on the leader board will compete in the final event of the year. These 12 golfers will keep the points that they have accumulated during the season and play in the final, where there will be triple points on offer. Michael Cullingworth and Tommy Lyons will be invited to join defending champion Liam Friel in representing Westport Golf Club in the Race to Portugal, staying at the beautiful Monte da Quinta Resort, Algarve, Portugal in early November.
In the latest competition Mick McGovern was the winner on 42pts, with Liam Halpin second on 39pts, and Conor O’Neill finishing in third place. The gross prize was claimed by Michael Kearns. The ladies’ competition was won by Nuala Moody, with Maureen Behan finishing second and Maureen Keane finishing third.
