During an application for an extension of hours at Castlebar Golf Club, at the holiday sitting of Ballina District Court on Wednesday, it was outlined to the court that a former member of the club is objecting to the golf club’s certificate of registration renewal, which will be before the annual licensing court in September.
Superintendent Joe Doherty outlined that a complaint was made to gardaí that the premises was not run in accordance with the Registration of Clubs Act. Following this complaint, a garda inspected the club on March 31, where a birthday party was taking place. The garda asked to look at the visitors’ book, which is a requirement under the Act. The garda was told that no such book existed. The court heard that this has since been rectified.
The manager of the bar, Joseph O’Donnell, also met gardaí in April, as there was concerns from the complainant that that manager was not following the regulation that a manager shall not have any personal interest in the sale of alcohol or in profits arising from such sale.
Solicitor for the golf club, Rory O’Connor, said that Mr O’Donnell is not employed by the club but is a licensee and has not breached the Act. The solicitor said that the application before the court was just for an extension to club hours for September 2. This extension was granted by Judge Conal Gibbons.
As for the objection to the certificate of registration for the club, this was adjourned to the annual licensing court.
