Castlebar Town Park, situated behind Scoil Raifteiri, will benefit from paving works and planting in the near future according to a local councillor.
Fine Gael town councillor Noreen Heston has received confirmation from the town clerk that tenders for the proposed works have been received and opened.
Cllr Heston is now calling for the contractor to be appointed quickly given that some of the equipment installed at the park is being “misused and falling into disrepair”.
She has also called for the installation of CCTV in the area and the appointment of a caretaker/supervisor.
According to Cllr Heston the place is beginning to look “derelict and dangerous” due to the unfinished work, but when completed the town park will be “another addition to open space facilities in the town”.
In a statement this week Cllr Heston praised the professionalism of town manager Seamus Granahan and his officials for having the courage to undertake this project as well as the Lough Lannagh Walks and the plans to extend a riverside walk all the way to the Museum of Country Life in Turlough. The Fine Gael representative also acknowledged the foresight of members of previous councils who proposed many of the schemes from which the town is now benefiting and she thanked the residents surrounding the town park who have shown great patience during the on-going works.
She has appealed to everyone to “use, enjoy and respect the facilities”.
