The Mayo senior ladies’ side will get back to championship action tomorrow evening when they make a trip to the midlands in the All Ireland qualifiers. At 6pm tomorrow they will go toe to toe with Tyrone in Birr in the second round of the All Ireland qualifiers as the main attraction on a double header bill.
Mayo were last in action in the Connacht final against Galway more than a month ago in McHale Park, a game they looked to have wrapped up with a 10 point lead late on. But Galway rallied when Mayo lost two players, Claire Egan and Aileen Gilroy, to storm back into the game.
Mayo will be glad to have a chance to get their championship campaign back on track after that defeat in what up to that had been a pretty much flawless year for them, and saw them pick up the division two league title with a win over Galway. On Saturday they will be facing division one opposition for the first time in the shape of the girls from the O’Neill county. Tyrone picked up two wins in their league campaign with victories over Donegal and Kildare under their belts in that competition, they were then knocked out of the Ulster championship by Donegal at the semi-final stage at the start of July. The game is also live on TG4 television.
Last eight face off in the intermediate championship
A number of tough local derbies are lined up for this weekend’s quarter finals of the Egan Jewellers Intermediate Football Championship. The meeting of near neighbours Burrishoole and Achill in Westport on Saturday evening will be a standing room only affair in Westport. Burrishoole are this year looking to finally make it out of this grade after losing the last two finals, while Achill would love nothing more than knocking out the men from McGovern Park, Charlestown, who are looking to bounce straight back up after being relegated last year. On Saturday evening, Bohola Moy Davitts will try to stop their charge back up the grades when they meet in Ballyhaunis. The final game on Saturday night is the meeting of Kilmaine and Swinford also in Ballyhaunis at 5.30pm. On Sunday, Hollymount-Carramore will square off against Parke in what looks like it could be a real classic in McHale Park, with throw in at 2pm.
No combi-tickets available for Mayo fans for All Ireland semi-finals
The Mayo County Board confirmed this week that there will not be any combination ticket deals available for Mayo supporters who wish to go to both the All Ireland minor football championship semi-final on August against Meath on August 26 and the senior semi-final the following week against Dublin (September 2 ).
The GAA announced earlier this week that Cork supporters would be able to purchase a special discounted combi-ticket for both their All Ireland senior hurling and football semi-finals over the coming weeks, but no such deal was available for the Mayo football supporter.
However club passes for groups of 15 to 50 club members at a cost of €10 per person are still available for the games, as are group passes where children are admitted at a cost of €3, with one adult free for every ten children also available for both games. For those interested in applying for either scheme, applications must be sent to [email protected] from the club secretary’s official e-mail account, by 5pm on Friday August 17 for the minor game and 5pm on Friday August 24 for the senior game.
Minor hurlers in All Ireland action
The Mayo minor hurlers will be in action tomorrow in the quarter finals of the All Ireland Minor B Hurling Championship. They will be making the long trip to Newbridge to take on home side Kildare for a place in the last four.
The Mayo u21 hurlers booked their spot in the Connacht u21 B final with a 2-8 to 1-5 win over Leitrim in Carrick on Shannon last night and will now go into the Connacht final.
