Comharchumann Forbartha Áitiúil Acla has been shortlisted for the Gradaim Pobail na Gaeltachta awards which will take place in Galway on November 30.
Gradaim Pobail na Gaeltachta, which is organised by Údarás na Gaeltachta in conjunction with TG4, recognises organisations for their outstanding work in promoting community development activities in their areas.
Speaking of Gradaim Pobail na Gaeltachta, Pádraig Ó hAoláin, Chief Executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta, said: “There are in excess of 30 funded community development organisations operating throughout the Gaeltacht which play an integral leadership role in community development activities. They provide a broad range of vital services for their communities and Gradaim Pobail na Gaeltachta celebrates this extraordinary work. These awards recognise nine particular organisations which have pioneered and been influential in the promotion of necessary social, cultural, economic and language activities in their areas.”
Comhlacht Forbartha Áitiúil Acla (CFAA ) was established in 1992 and is based in Seanscoil an Chrompáin, a local restored and redeveloped school, which acts as a local resource centre.
The community group’s mission is to promote and support the sustainable social, economic and cultural development of the parish of Achill and as a result provides a range of vital services to the local community.
CFAA provides a range of education and training courses for adults and the youth in areas such as information technology, personal development and Irish language. It operates the rural transport initiative (Bus Acla ) and administers the rural social scheme which has seen much environmental work being carried out in villages on the island. CFAA also administers the social inclusion programme (LDSIP ) which allows it to give advice, guidance and small-scale financial assistance to specific target groups within the area.
The Gradaim Pobail na Gaeltachta awards will be presented at a gala event in the Radisson SAS Hotel in Galway on Sunday November 30. The event will be broadcast live on TG4.
