Councillor suggests new roundabout system for Westport

Councillor Christy Hyland said that for a one month trial period the traffic lights near the Castlecourt Hotel should be switched off and a roundabout system be put in place in order to alleviate traffic congestion in the town.

Cllr Hyland made these comments at the Westport JPC meeting earlier this week. The councillor said that he thinks the traffic congestion in the town is caused by these lights. Cllr Hyland also said that the parking of Bus Eireann buses on Mill Street caused a traffic problem last week, when he saw five buses parked on that street which backed up traffic.

JPC member Liam Keaveney added that on Bridge Street people are driving up the left lane and crossing over at the top of the top of the street instead of driving on the right lane the whole way up the street.

Town clerk Anne Moore said that the town engineer needs to be asked to consider these issues.
