Get down to the Roscommon Races next Tuesday

Top jockey Ruby Walsh may be among the winners at Roscommon next Tuesday.

Festival season is as good an excuse as any to attend the races in Roscommon but this Tuesday, August 7, there are more reasons than ever.

The first race gets under way at 5.45pm. Weather permitting of course, this meeting is likely to be biggest of the year at the Lenabane track. The first three-year-old hurdle of the year takes place while Roscommon GAA is hosting an evening at the course, tickets for which may be purchased from any of the GAA clubs in the county.

Significantly also, from both a racing and attendance point of view, is the fact that the meeting takes place just two days after the end of the Galway festival. “Nationally, this is a big time of the year for racing and for the west of Ireland, this is a very enjoyable time. Many will attend Roscommon having taken in the festival at Galway and I’m sure the shrewd punters will be watching for what horses line up for the second time in a few days,” said Roscommon racecourse manager, Michael Finneran.

The race card is all national hunt racing, the type of card that is a huge crowd pleaser at west of Ireland tracks. It consists of three hurdles, three chases, and a bumper, among which is the eagerly awaited first hurdle race of the year for three-year-olds.

Tuesday’s meeting will see some of the new ground that was developed in the spring of 2011 raced on for the first time, a development that will give the course more options on racedays. The atmosphere is always fantastic as this meeting and with holiday makers always in abundance, Roscommon is the place to be this coming Tuesday.
