Tenants of local authority houses who engage in criminal activity or antisocial behaviour should be put out of their accommodation, according to Westport town councillor Christy Hyland.
Cllr Hyland said that he has received numerous phone calls about people who are in fear from certain local authority tenants, “it is wrong”. The councillor said, “we’re gone soft” and remarked that if they are in breach of tenancy agreements “it’s over” and “put them out”.
At the JPC meeting on Monday the councillor also lashed out at bail conditions for “career criminals” as these criminals who commit crime in the neighbourhood apply for bail once they arrive in court, along with legal aid, and once bail is granted they are back on the streets again to commit further crime.
