League action kicks back into gear this weekend after a break for the cup last week across the Mayo leagues. Westport United sit 11 points clear at the top of the Super League at the moment and there looks to be no catching them over the final six games.
It is the action in the chasing pack that has the most excitement at the moment, only four points separates the five sides from second to sixth place in the table. You can even throw in Fahy Rovers who are second bottom at the moment, but are only three points off sixth place and seven points off second placed Iorras Aontaithe.
Fahy Rovers battle to pull themselves out of the relegation zone, and will face a very tough test on Saturday evening when they face Westport United at the Sportspark. Castlebar Celtic, who are currently sitting in fifth place in the table, although they do have at least one game in hand on most sides in the league and two on some others, will host second placed Iorras Aontaithe on Saturday. A win for Declan Kilkelly’s side will see them move one point ahead of the men from Erris in the standings. The clash of current third placed Ballina Town and fourth placed Claremorris could be the game of the weekend. Both sides are locked on 12 points each at the minute, with Ballina Town having a game in hand on their opponents this weekend also, which they will play next Thursday, August 2, when they host Westport United. The final game of the Super League this Saturday evening is the meeting of Straide and Foxford United and Manulla. The hosts are currently rooted to the bottom of the table with only two points to show from their nine games so far, but a win over Manulla will see them move to within four points of their visitors in the table.
All tight at the top of the Premier A
While Westport United are running away with the Super League title, things could hardly be tighter in the Premier A. The top three sides are separated by only three points after each side has played nine games. Ballyheane are league leaders at the moment on 20 points, with Conn Rangers in second on 18 points and Snugboro United just behind in third on 17 points. The big game of the weekend in this division is the high noon showdown between Snugboro United and Ballyheane in Conway Park on Sunday. A win for the hosts will pull them level on points with the Hane, while a win for the Quigley Park outfit will send them six points clear of their fellow promotion chasers.
Second placed Conn Rangers will be looking to keep up their own title challenge when they host Castlebar Celtic B in Mount Falcon in a game that could see them go top depending on the outcome of the Snugboro United and Ballyheane game. Fourth placed Ballinrobe Town will be confident of keeping up their own push to keep in the reckoning down the stretch when they take on bottom of the table Swinford, while sixth place Clew Bay United will host seventh place Bangor Hibs in a game that could see Bangor Hibs pull level on points with the United if they pull out a win on Sunday.
Divisional Cup finals continue
The Divisional Cup final season continues in Milebush on Sunday afternoon when Moy Villa and Charlestown Athletic meet in the Tuohy Cup sponsored by Stephen McDonnell Construction at 3.30pm.
