Man walked out of hotel with flat screen TV

A man who took a flat screen TV from a hotel in Ballina as his own TV was broken, was before Ballina District Court this week.

On April 27 2012, at 3.20pm, John Garvey, 207 Ridgepool, Apt 1, Barrett Street, Ballina entered Ballina Manor Hotel, Barrett Street, where he went to the first floor bar and removed a TV from the wall; placed it in a recycling shopping bag he had with him, and left the hotel. The incident was captured on CCTV. Garvey was arrested on April 30 and the defendant admitted his involvement.

Judge Mary Devins said that the incident “gives a whole new meaning to recycling.” When asked by the judge how he knew that the TV was there he said that he drank in that bar. The 38-year-old, who has previous convictions, said that he is now barred from the hotel.

Judge Devins adjourned the case for sentencing to July 23 2013 and Garvey was told that if he breaks the law again between now and sentencing he will be going to prison.
