Big names make intermediate grades

Mayo IFC: Round Up: Round 3

In the intermediate championship in group one Swinford topped the group thanks to a 1-11 to 0-9 win over Parke, in Parke on Sunday afternoon. But it wasn't all bad news for the home side who still managed to make it into the last eight. Parke had previously beaten Ballyhaunis and drew with Kiltimagh leaving them on three points. Behind them in the table was Ballyhaunis on two points from their win over Swinford in round two, having already lost to Parke in round one and Kiltimagh who had only a point to show for their two games from their draw with Parke in round two. On Sunday, Ballyhaunis and Kiltimagh played out a 2-5 to 1-8 draw in Ballyhaunis. Which left the home side level on points with Parke and with a better scoring difference, but with places being decided on head-to-head results rather than scoring difference when two sides were tied on points, its the west Mayo side who went through to the last eight.

Charlestown wrapped up their 100 per cent record in group two thanks to a comprehensive 1-14 to 0-6 win over Cill Chomain on Saturday evening to top the group. But the real fun was in Islandeady where, the home side and Achill had it all to play for, a win would send either in to the last eight, while a draw would be good enough for Achill on scoring difference and that's exactly what they got on a score of 0-11 each. That draw put the islanders through after both sides finished on three points each and their draw nullified the head-to-head result.

If you thought it was tight in group two, it was nothing compared to group three where three sides all finished on four points with two wins each from their three games. The unlucky one of the three was plucky Bonniconlon who went out of the championship on scoring difference.

The north Mayo men had two wins from two over Kilmaine and Killala before Sunday's game with Burrishoole. However Colm McManamon's men proved to strong running out ten point winners on a score line of 1-11 to 0-4. That result combined with Kilmaine's 2-15 to 0-9 win over Killala in north Mayo sent Bonni' packing for another year and Burrishoole through as group winners with Kilmaine in second place.

In group four Hollymount-Carramore made it three out of three with a 0-14 to 1-7 win over Belmullet to wrap up first place, while Boholla Moy Davitts of Celebrity Banisteoir and Calum Best fame made sure of second place and a spot in the last eight with a 1-17 to 1-8 win over Mayo Gaels who finished bottom of the table.
