Cup action takes over this weekend

Bar three catch up games that took place last night after this paper went to print, it’s all about knock-out cup and shield action this weekend in Mayo — the Connacht Gold Cup and Shield to be precise. The catch up games that took place last night included what potentially looked like a cracker of a game between Claremorris and Castlebar Celtic in Concannon Park in the Super League. The game is one of two that Celtic have in hand over league leaders Westport United who they are trying to chase down — and if they manage to pick up wins in both they will close the gap at the top to seven points.

On Sunday, bottom of the Super League Straide and Foxford United will host Glenhest Rovers in a game that they will be hoping to use to kick-start their fight away from the bottom of the table and get a cup run going. Westport United will be hot favourites to see off Newport Town who are only in their second year back in the league. Claremorris will follow up their league game on Thursday night with a home game against Charlestown Athletic that they will be confident of coming out on the right side of the result.

In one of the more novel pairings that happens from time to time in cup competitions in Mayo, Ballyheane B will host their first team in action in Quigley Park on Sunday. In the shield Super League side Manulla will host Conn Rangers B and Iorras Aontaithe will welcome Crossmolina. The previous evening in the cup Ballina Town will be away to Castlebar Celtic C and Snugboro United will travel to Clew Bay United.
