Two thirds of Mayo households have paid the household charge

Mayo is ahead of the national average when it comes to collecting the household charge, the July monthly meeting of Mayo County Council was told this week.

County Manager Peter Hynes told the members that, the national average is around the 62 per cent mark, but in Mayo it is around about the 66 per cent mark.

He went on to inform the members of the steps being taken to get the outstanding households to pay the charge. “We have been in the process of issuing reminder letters to the outstanding households. We’d like to thank the two thirds who have paid so far and remind the one third who have yet to pay.

We rely on this for funding programs in the county and any shortfall in funding late on in the year could have a major impact on our programmes
