A local entrepreneur has turned the recession to his advantage by setting up a training business in Kiltimagh. Determination and good timing has seen Allen Business Consultancy expand its services and a new premises was officially opened last week.
Harvey Allen moved from London to Mayo in 1999 but 10 years later the former local authority manager found himself unemployed. Armed with a Degree in Business, a Degree in Human Resources, and a FAS course in business start-up, Harvey rented office space in the IRD building in Aidan Street Kiltimagh.
“I wanted to set up a type of IBEC for small business who found it too expensive to pay IBEC membership” he explained. He started off providing a consultancy service on Employment Law and Safety at Work before gaining his FETAC accreditation as a training provider last September. Since then he has run 12 courses and is hopeful that his business entrepreneurship training courses will prove a vital component of the Government’s action plan to create jobs.
“It’s a three-pronged approach with the consultancy service, training course and web site design”, he explained.
Speaking at the official opening last Thursday, Deputy John O’Mahony said: “The Government are trying to rebuild the economy using a brick by brick approach. We need to re-train, re-skill and up-skill people into employment. I cannot stress enough the importance of needs based accredited training such as that provided by Allen Business Consultancy.”
