Halt called to practise of parking on footpaths outside banks

A Castlebar councillor is calling for a halt to parking on footpaths by personnel involved in collecting cash from banks.

Independent Castlebar and Mayo county councillor Michael Kilcoyne, told the Mayo Advertiser: “Some arrangement is going to have to be made for the delivery of money to the banks rather than having the Army, Garda, and Securicor vehicles pulling in on the new footpaths that have been installed in Castlebar. I accept the money has to be delivered but it has to be done in a different way. If an ordinary person living in the town who is paying rates parks on the footpath, they get a ticket; what’s good for one should be good for the other. This practice by Army or Garda personnel is unacceptable; they shouldn’t be parking on the footpaths, the footpaths are for walking on.”

Cllr Kilcoyne is to raise the matter at a meeting of Castlebar Town Council on Thursday next, when he will call on the council “to enter into discussions with the financial institutions in the town, with a view to making arrangements for the delivery and collection of cash by a method other than the current arrangement whereby vehicles are parking on the footpaths of the newly refurbished streets of the town”.

Other motions set to be discussed at next week’s Castlebar Town Council meeting include:

Submitted by Councillor Brendan Heneghan

(1 ) “that Castlebar Town Council adopts appropriate bye laws for control of dogs within Urban Area”.
