Taoiseach announces HIQA approval for Sacred Heart Hospital

A statement issued on behalf of Taoiseach Enda Kenny has “welcomed the announcement that the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA ) has approved the registration of the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar.”

The statement continues: “This approval will secure its future for the next three years ensuring the continuance of an excellent service to the people of Mayo.

“I strongly welcome this announcement. The Sacred Heart Hospital has long been a well respected centre of excellence for the elderly in Mayo, and I am delighted at the news that this wonderful service is set to continue. HIQA’s announcement will come as a great relief to residents, staff, and the local community alike.”

He continued: “It is unfortunate that the level of speculation surrounding the future of the Sacred Heart has caused concern to so many. This announcement should put any fears to rest, and I hope those speculators will now acknowledge the excellent work of the Sacred Heart continuing into the future. It is also important to note the excellent work of the four Fine Gael members of Castlebar Town Council and their efforts on this matter.”

Commenting on the announcement, independent Castlebar councillor, Michael Kilcoyne stated: “There were 330 beds when the Sacred Heart was first opened and now Fine Gael is clapping itself on the back because 77 beds are being kept there, which are all full at the moment. They are trying to hoodwink people; this is not adequate”, he said.
