Approval given to Knock parking bye-laws

New plan to be tried before imposition of pay and display

The members of the Claremorris Electoral Area Committee gave the go ahead to implement new parking bye-laws for Knock that will allow the imposition of pay and display parking. However pay and display parking will not be introduced if a new parking system that is being planned is successful this year in dealing with the ongoing problem in the east Mayo town.

Director of services for the area, Seamus Granahan, told the meeting: “This issue has been discussed at length at a number of meetings and we have got to this stage. Consensus is that we will be liaising with the Gardai on parking and road markings and parking issues. We will change what we have to on the ground and try to enforce the parking laws normally this year. However if it doesn’t work, we have now agreed that this council can agree a date at a meeting, and pay and display will come in then to try and solve the problem if it still exists.”

Cllr John Cribben welcomed the news saying: “This is an issue that has been ongoing for 30 years now. There has been meeting after meeting about it, and I’m glad we finally now could have a solution to it.” Cllr Richard Finn also welcomed the news and praised the efforts by everyone involved in trying to find a solution to the issue.”
