Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony, has this week urged septic tank owners across Mayo to avail of the low registration fee of just €5, which is on offer for the next three months.
For those who choose to register their systems after September 28, the normal fee of €50 will apply. “We can all agree that protecting jobs, our health and the environment by ensuring we have a safe and secure water supply is of paramount importance. A clean and dependable water supply is essential to maintain a strong performance in our agricultural, tourism and food sectors, as well as ensuring we continue to attract high quality foreign investment.
“Making sure all of our septic tanks and waste water treatment systems are up to scratch is a necessary part of this process. The registration system is now open, and I’m encouraging everyone across Mayo who has a septic tank attached to their home to register their system now for €5. Inspections will begin next year, and the vast majority of systems are expected to pass without any issues.”
He went on to say that people would be given plenty notice of their inspection. “ If you own a septic tank, it’s your responsibility to register it; there are no exemptions. Homeowners will be notified at least 20 days in advance of any inspection, so be wary of any one who shows up at your property claiming to be a tank inspector without any prior notice. With almost half a million septic tanks across the country, it’s in everyone’s interests that each system is registered without delay. The opposition is deliberately scaremongering on this issue. The reality is, Fianna Fáil pledged to introduce an inspection regime back in 2009; they just did nothing about it.”
