Oesophageal cancer survivor, Gerard McCarthy from Lisselton, Co Kerry is to undertake a “Dawn to Dusk 32 County Motorcycle Challenge” in aid of the Mercy University Hospital Foundation on June 21 next, passing through Charlestown, Co Mayo along his journey.
The Motorcycle Challenge will see Gerard ride his motorcycle through every county in Ireland, covering over 700 miles from dawn to dusk. He will leave his home town of Lisselton, Co Kerry at 4am on June 21, and commence the long journey, until he finally makes it back to Cork, finishing outside the Mercy University Hospital in Cork City just before darkness.
In October 2007, Gerard, a former garda, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, the fastest growing cancer in the western world. In February 2008 he underwent a successful oesophagectomy and since his recovery has embarked on a 'new life' as a motorcycle instructor.
Gerard McCarthy is expected to arrive in Strokestown at around 8am and go on to take a break when he arrives in Charlestown.
