With 289 points in 2011, Belmullet is now the Tidiest Small Town (Category C ) in not only Mayo, but also in Connacht, needing another 21 points to win the competition nationally.
Belmullet Tidy Towns committee is now advising that the national title win could be secured by focusing on its Wildlife and Natural Amenities, Recycling and Litter Control in the next couple of years.
The plan is as follows:
1. This June, to highlight its Wildlife and Natural Amenities, a representative from The Ballycroy National Park will give a talk that promises to be engaging, on Monday June 18 . The talk, and small walk, starts at 10am in the morning, assembling at the Quay, at the bottom of Quay Street. All are welcome, young and old.
2. Nationwide Tidy Towns 2012 judging takes place in the last few weeks in June, so right now Litter Control is a major priority. The committee is encouraging residents on each street/area to participate. There will be a ‘central jumbo clean-up’ of the town starting on the Square at 7pm on Monday June 18 and Monday June 25. All welcome and young and old are urged to come along.
A spokesperson stated: “Don’t leave it up to someone else. Your participation is vitally important. Come out: bring a friend, bring a neighbour, make an evening of it. Do your bit: decide what needs attention on your street/area. Be part of the team that increases our points in 2012.”
