Bike Week comes to Mayo

Bike Week 2012 takes place between June 16 and 24. Westport Town Council in association with An Taisce, Iompar Mhaigh Eo and Mayo County Council’s Road Safety Officer have organised a number of events in Westport during Bike Week.

On Tuesday, June 19 a basics of better biking an on-line skills class for adults and a bike skills for Primary School children will be held at the Skate Park. The children will learn how to correctly wear a helmet and carry out checks on their bike and enjoy a spin on the town greenway. During Bike Week there will be an opportunity to have a free bike health check at Westport Bike Shop, The Paddock, or at Brehany’s on Castlebar Street.

There will also be a number of events taking place in Castlebar to celebrate the bike week which is being organised by Smart Travel Castlebar. The annual Bike Fest on the Mall for schools in the Castlebar area will take place on Wednesday, June 20, from 11:30am to 1pm. There will be fun games promoting cycling and sustainable transport as well as cycle training. This will be followed at 1pm by Mass cycle around the town of Castlebar and Lough Lannagh. The cycle will start at the Mall and finish at Lough Lannagh Holiday Village where refreshments will be provided.

For this initiative to encourage people to cycle to work for bike week, Smart Travel Castlebar will provide free teas and coffees at Lough Lannagh Holiday Village to participants every morning during the week between 8:30am to 9:30am. This is a great opportunity to share your commuting stories over a cuppa with others. Showers will also be available. Anyone who registers and cycles to work for the week will also be eligible for a free draw and the opportunity to win a brand new bike.
