Polling stations in colleges would increase turnout, says Higgins

Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins has suggested that voting turnout for elections and referendums would be considerably increased if polling stations were established in third level colleges and institutions.

The call comes in the wake of a turnout of only 50 per cent in last weeks referendum.

Making the call Jim Higgins says "There are thousands of students in third level colleges and institutions who would love to participate in the electoral process but are denied this opportunity, indeed right, because elections and referenda are held on a Thursday or Friday. The situation is exacerbated if the election happens to coincide with examinations.

”There is no reason why an electoral register cannot be established for each college or institution and a separate room made available for voting on Election Day,” he said.
