A 39-year-old man from Achill Sound died on the way to Castlebar Garda Station after being arrested following an incident at Cox’s Bar in Castlebar at 1am on Thursday June 7.
The deceased man, who has been named as Pauraic O’Donnell, was brought from Cox’s Bar, Linenhall Street by Garda car, however upon arrival at the station, which is only a short distance away, gardaí found that Mr O’Donnell was unresponsive. Gardaí tried to revive him, and he was brought by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation is now underway and the Garda Ombudsman Commission are now appealing for witnesses following the incident in the bar. Any witnesses are asked to contact the Garda Ombudsman Commission at 1890 600 800.
The Garda Commissioner referred the incident to the Garda Ombudsman according to Section 102 of the An Garda Siochana Act 2005. This referral is standard procedure when a person receives serious injury or dies while in garda custody.
