Prendergast spoils the Covey party

At round six of the Mayo cycling league held recently in Cong, Westport’s Covey Wheelers, came in their masses to Cong to protect the league leader Ger Corcoran, with over half the field from the Westport town the odds were definitely in their favour.

With two Mayo teams away on the Rás, the scratch group was a little be down on horse power but this did not deter them from working and they caught all the groups ahead inside the last lap. Barry Holian who was second overall going into this round had it all to do to beat the swarm of Covies but was well beaten by a surprise attack by Cunga Rider, Jason Prendergast. Ger Corcoran league leader held on for third with team-mate Colin Browne fourth and rejuvenated Mark Kelly of Western lakes in fifth place. In the team competition Covey Wheelers have closed the gap on Western Lakes CC and Castlebar are still in contention as the time trial and hill climb suit their riders.

After six rounds, Ger Corcoran still leads the field with a total of 314pts, but Barry Holian is hot on his heels on 302pts. Keith O’Connell has moved into third place with Padraig Marrey fourth and Kevin Roache in fifth. However the revised scoring system will leave the League wide open with anyone in the top 15 having a chance until the last rider has crossed the line in the final time trial on Wednesday June 13.
