Balla
Last weekend’s competition sponsored by Roche’s, Balla was won by Aodán MacSuibhne with a score of 39pts, Paraic Cuffe came second with a score of 39pts while Jimmy Sheridan came third. The ladies’ competition was won by Mary Lavin with Louise McMahon coming second and Nora Heraty third. Breege Jennings was the winner of the category prize. Patrick McDonnell hit a hole in one on Sunday in the competition. This weekend’s stableford competition is sponsored by Albany, Castlebar.
Ballinrobe
Rose Dooley was the winner of the ladies’ competition last weekend with a score of 39pts, the Cat 1 prize went to Shannon Burke with Catherine Burke taking the Cat 2 win. Carmel Maloney was the top finisher in Cat 3, with Joanne Comer the best over the first nine holes and Marian Walsh the best on the back nine.
Ballina
Pascal Tuohy was the winner of the 18 hole singles competition with a score of 48pts, John Muldoon finished off in second place on 44pts, with Robert Dervin coming home in third. Ballina’s Jimmy Bruen squad had a big four and one win over Westport last week. The US Open Challenge fundraisers currently proving very popular, with members trying hard to choose the best combination of golfers that will put them in line to win one of the €500, €200 or €100 prizes on offer. Arrangements are being put in place for the Club Classic over the August bank holiday weekend, where a car will be on offer for a hole in one at the fifth hole.
Castlebar
Eamon Byrne was the winner of the Eddie Egan Jewellers competition with a score of 68, Billy Evans was a close second on 69 with Frank Murray third. Paddy Burke took the gross prize. Dympna Smyth won the ladies’ competition with Evelyn Brady taking second and Claire Granhan third. Beverly Flynn was fourth on 39pts. In the inter-club mixed foursomes, Castlebar had a great win over Ballinrobe last week.
Claremorris
Peter Coen was the winner of the Green’s Menswear/JT Sports sponsored competition on 43pts. Tom Higgins was the winner of the Cat 1 prize, with Brendan Walsh taking Cat 2 an Pat Garvey taking Cat 3. The ladies’ competition was won by Ann Moran on 37pts with Marie Healy taking second spot on 36pts.
Westport
Liam Halpin’s score of 41pts playing off four was enough to secure him the win in the gents’ open competition last Sunday in Westport. He finished in front of John Mannion who also finished on 41pts, with Jack O’Donnell taking third place on 40pts. The ladies’ open Sunday competition was claimed by Colette Fleming with a score of 38pts, with Nuala Hopkins coming second and Ann Mayberry third. The gents’ Saturday competition was won by Jack O’Donnell with Eugene Murtagh coming second.
Corrib Gas/Carne Pro-Am 2012
The annual Corrib Natural Gas/Carne Golf Links Pro-Am takes place at the scenic links course in Belmullet on June 16 to 17, and has attracted another quality field of golfers and large crowds are expected over the weekend. It is expected that over 50 teams will take part in this year’s event and, as usual, a professional who will be bidding for a slice of the €20,000 prize fund on offer will join forces with three amateurs.
The Corrib Gas Partners are the main sponsors of the event again this year.
Gerry Campbell, Project Director with Shell E&P Ireland Limited (operators of the Corrib gas project ), expressed his delight at the company’s association with the event. “We have supported the Carne Pro-Am for many years now because we know what an important weekend in the community calendar it is. Many of our staff play the Carne links course on a regular basis and many have played in the pro-am in the past, so it is something we are very proud to be part of,” he said. While entries for the competition have been flooding in over the past two months, there are still a few places remaining.
