The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA ) has published its National Waste Report for 2010 which provides data on Ireland’s waste generation and management and the progress being made in meeting national and international waste targets.
The report found that household waste collected in Mayo decreased marginally by 23 tonnes compared to 2009 figures. This reduction in household waste reflects the decrease in personal consumption in the economic downturn, despite an increase in population.
Fiona McCoole, EPA office of climate, licensing, and resource use, commented: “The 2010 National Waste Report findings illustrate that progress is being made in managing and dealing effectively with waste while highlighting the challenges that lie ahead. The EPA’s National Waste Prevention Programme provides the support needed for homes, businesses, and communities to work towards resource efficiency and conservation initiatives for waste and water.”
