Castlebar businessman gearing up for motorcycle ride

A Castlebar businessman is seeking to raise funds in aid of Temple Street Children's Hospital by riding a motorbike through the famous coast-to-coast Route 66 in America.

Tommy Hurst of Hurst Heating and Plumbing, Moneen, will travel the 2,488 mile route with a group of local businessmen across the oldest highway in the US stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles.

The Route 66 Motorcycle challenge takes place every two years and to be eligible participants must raise at least €8,600. In the past four years the venture has raised more than €1.5 million which has gone some way towards funding badly needed equipment at the hospital. The trip is expected to take eight days to complete and Hurst and his colleagues have recently been brushing up on their bike skills with the Fire Brigade Centre in Clontarf.

“I've travelled the route before from Phoenix all the way to San Diego, where I have a sister,” said Hurst, who remembers miles of “lovely sand” along the way.

In business for 25 years, Hurst regularly raises funds for charity by participating in cycling events. He is scheduled to take off to the US in the last week in September and is appealing to the public to help him in his fund-raising drive. Further information on 094 90 23453 and www.route66.ie
