Knockmore Fianna Fail express anger over post office closure

The recent closure of the Knockmore village post office was condemned at the May meeting of the Knockmore Area Fianna Fáil Cumann, with members criticising An Post for taking the decision to close the post office in an area with a population of over 4,000 people. The Government and the four sitting Mayo Fine Gael TDs were also charged with “standing idly by while the service was withdrawn”.

The Knockmore Post Office Action Committee under the chairmanship of Michael Rochford was congratulated for its dedication and commitment to the community and for doing everything in its power to prevent the closure occurring. Tributes were also paid to Dara Calleary TD for his efforts in the matter and it was agreed that it was encouraging to see the community coming together to work towards a common goal.

A Knockmore Cumann spokesperson said: “Members described the inability of the four Government TDs, including An Taoiseach and a Minister of State, to stand with the people and prevent this backward move for a vibrant rural community, as shameful and frustrating.

“Knockmore Fianna Fáil has committed itself to continuing to support the action group as they pursue the issue with the four Fine Gael TDs for Mayo and the Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte, in reference to his recent statement on local radio that the establishment of an agency remains a possibility.”
