Large turnout on Clare Island as early turn out low across rest of the county

The turnout in Mayo for polling on the Fiscal Compact Referendum was slow yesterday morning as drizzle replaced the sunshine the county had been used to in the previous week. However on Clare Island, where voting took place on Tuesday, the turnout was at 52 per cent according to the office of Fintan Murphy, the returning officer for Mayo.

With most of the voting expected to take place in the evening after people finished work, turnout was predictably slow in the first five hours of polling between 7am and noon. In Foxford it was at nine per cent, Ballyhaunis reported 6.7 per cent, Claremorris had a figure of seven per cent, and St Joseph’s Ballinrobe reporting turnout of 6.3 per cent.

In Ballina the Sean Duffy Centre had a turnout of eight per cent and the boys school of 6.8 per cent. In Castlebar in St Patrick’s National School where An Taoiseach Enda Kenny voted, there was a 9.2 per cent turnout, while it was seven per cent in Scoil Rafteri and nine per cent in the family centre, all at noon.
