This week (May 28 to June 4 ) is National Water Safety Awareness Week and as part of its awareness campaign, Mayo County Council, with the help of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, has issued an appeal to “leave those buoys alone”.
The buoys in question are of course, the ring buoys that are put in place at waterways throughout Mayo, and indeed every county in Ireland, for the safety of the general public.
In launching the campaign at the recently opened new footbridge and lakeside walkway at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar, Mr Kenny pointed out the potential serious repercussions of water safety equipment being tampered with.
“I appeal to everyone, young and old, to have respect for public rescue and emergency equipment. A missing ring buoy can too easily become a lost life.”
Michael Gavin, water safety officer, Mayo County Council outlined that a website www.ringbuoys.ie has been developed by Irish Water Safety, the statutory body for the promotion of water safety awareness in Ireland. The site was set up to help local authorities and the general public to speedily identify missing and damaged ring buoys which are dotted throughout the country.
