Munnelly welcomes slip way funding

Killala Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly welcomed the allocation of €112,500 to re-develop Kilcummin slipway in Carrowmore-Lacken. The allocation from the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine Simon Coveney will allow the construction of a new slipway and turning area, as well as the repair of the storm wall which collapsed over the winter.

Cllr Munnelly, who first raised the need for a new slipway in Kilcummin in 2005, said that he was delighted with the news. “It’s great news for Kilcummin, this slipway has been a problem for quite a while, and people were starting to wonder whether anything was ever going to be done about it. Last winter, the storm wall adjacent to the slipway collapsed, so this allocation of funding is very timely.”

Cllr Munnelly said the allocation to Kilcummin, with the allocation of a similar amount for improvements at Ballina Harbour mean that the three piers in the Ballina Electoral Area have been improved in the past 12 months. “An allocation was made last year to Killala Harbour, which repaired the long standing problems with the old pier, and now Ballina and Kilcummin are in this year’s programme. That means by the end of this year, all of the three harbours in the Ballina Electoral Area will have received improvement, something that was long overdue.”
