Average age of Mayo population is in the 30s

New CSO statistics released in a report on the profile of older and younger people in Ireland show that the average age in Mayo according to the 2011 census is 38.6.

The report shows that in Mayo, with a population of 130,638, the average age of the aggregate town areas is 36.3 and 39.6 in rural areas. The low point age of the county is 21, which reflects the rural nature of the county as young people move away to work and study.

Looking at the main towns of Mayo, Castlebar’s population of 12,138 is mostly made up of those between the ages of 25 to 44 (4,037 ), followed by 2,675 people in the 45 to 64 age group; 2,533 in the 0 to 14 age group; 1,631 in the 15 to 24 age group and 1,442 aged 65 and over.

In Ballina (11,086 ) again the majority of the population were in the 25 to 44 age category (3,418 ). This was followed by 2,525 (45 to 64 ); 2,490 (0 to 14 ); 1,349 (65 plus ) and 1,304 (15 to 24 ).

Two thousand and one people in Westport (population 6,063 ) are aged between 25 and 44; 1,418 (45 to 64 ); 1,023 (65 and older ); 1,003 (0 to 14 ); 618 aged from 15 to 24.

The main age group in Ballinrobe from a population of 2,704 is again in the 25 to 44 (1,055 ); 663 (0 to 14 ); 432 (45 to 64 ); 291 (65 plus ) and 263 (15 to 24 ).
