Pop-up shops to open in Westport

Two innovative schemes to encourage new business in Westport are to commence in Westport after receiving full support from the town council.

The first initiative is for new businesses, where premises which have been vacant for at least six months will be let out at a competitive price to start-up businesses. A lease of two years must be entered into and will apply to retail proposals only. Fifty per cent of fit out costs can be claimed back.

The second initiative is for the establishment of pop-up shops in the town centre in empty commercial properties. These shops, which can host retail experiences, exhibitions and events can be open for six to eight weeks.

Town manager Martin Keating said that these initiatives are very exciting for the town centre and will create an environment in the town which is “conducive to entrepreneurship”.

Councillors welcomed the initiatives, however it was noted at the meeting that the Chamber of Commerce did not give any response to the council in relation to these schemes.
