Mother of triplets grew cannabis in back garden

A 33-year-old mother of three-year-old triplets was before Castlebar District Court on Wednesday for the cultivation of cannabis.

Gardaí obtained a search warrant to search the home of Michelle O’Malley, Ballishahina, Shrule, on June 22 2011 following confidential information received.

O’Malley admitted to gardaí that she was growing four cannabis plants in a small growing tent at the rear of her garage. O’Malley had purchased seeds from the internet in order to grow it.

The defendant, who is from New York, moved to Ireland in 2009 with her Irish husband. O’Malley told the court that she does not drink and was “under stress at the time”. Judge Mary Devins said: “I think you are a grossly irresponsible mother.” O’Malley has no previous conviction and is currently unemployed.

Judge Devins adjourned the case to July 18 for a probation report.
