Walking enthusiasts will have a unique opportunity to explore the countryside off the Great Western Greenway this June bank holiday weekend at Burrishoole Walking Festival.
Events kick off on Friday June 1 with a talk in Hotel Newport at 8.30pm on the history of the Westport-Achill railway line. On Saturday June 2, registration is from 10.15am at Derrada Community Centre. Registration is €35 and includes admission, refreshments and entertainment for the three days. Students are €20 and children under 12s are €5. Two levels of walks are available to accommodate all participants. A packed lunch is provided and walks commence at 11am. There will be entertainment in the Derrada centre at 9pm.
On Sunday June 3, registration for new walkers is at 10.45am. The registration fee for Sunday only is €20 and walks start at 11.30am.
That night a gala dinner and dance to celebrate the 25th anniversary takes place in Nevins of Tiernaur at 8.30pm. Tickets are €25 and numbers are limited.
On Monday, June 4, there will be a guided talk on local heritage and sights by Brian Hoban, in Newport, at 10am.
There will be concelebrated Mass at the Oghillie Mass Rock at 2pm. The ascent starts at 12.30pm. and will be followed by refreshments in Derrada. www.burrishoolewalkfest.net
