Mayo 4-17
Galway 2-7
Class is permanent and on Saturday afternoon in Parnell Park, Cora Staunton showed that once again. The Carnacon sharp shooter scored 2-11 of Mayo’s 4-17 total as they blitzed Galway in this division two final. Mayo were also forced to do it the hard way when captain Claire Egan was sent off after 39 minutes when she got her second sin binning of the afternoon.
While Mayo ended winning by 16 points it was Galway who got off to a great start with Deirdre Brennan breaking through to score a goal early on, Galway rattled the crossbar with another effort before the game had settled down, and were leading by 1-3 to 0-1 just after the 10 minute mark.
Mayo came back into the game and at half time the sides were level at 0-8 to 1-5. But Mayo were about to find a couple of extra gears in the second half that Galway had no response for, Triona McNicholas hit the net for the first Mayo goal, Mayo clipped on a trio of points before Staunton bagged her first goal of the game to put Mayo into a 2-11 to 1-5 lead and leave Galway all out of sorts. Fiona McHale chipped in with Mayo’s third goal before Staunton rounded off the three pointers with her second and Mayo’s fourth goal.
Fr Mike Murphy could not have asked for better preparation ahead of the championship with his side securing promotion back to division one for next year.
