Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca Claremorris was crowned overall winner at this week’s Mayo Science and Technology Competition held in Westport.
Run by Mayo County Council, the competition encouraged primary schools from all over Mayo to have fun with science or technology and prepare projects which researched and experimented with an idea, problem or hypothesis.
Teacher Maura Higgins said she was delighted when one of the Gaelscoil team’s ‘Magnets and Distance’ was announced the overall Mayo School winner for 2012.
“We began working on the Science and Technology Projects over two months ago, all the children in fifth and sixth class got involved,” she said “ Not only did they learn to have fun with science, but they also began learning vitally important team building and presentation skills. Three teams from the school were selected to go forward to the final in Westport this week. So after everyone’s hard work it was the icing on the cake when one of our teams were the outright winners.”
