Government threats will not work - Ruane

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has criticised ‘scaremongering tactics’ used by Finance Minister Michael Noonan this week regarding the treaty.

Cllr Ruane said: “This week, Michael Noonan made an outrageous threat to voters when he said that if they didn’t vote for the treaty, he would introduce a harsher budget in December. This is an outrageous statement for the Minister to make.

“This Government has repeatedly said that the treaty would have no impact on the Irish economy until after we exit the current troika austerity programme in 2015. His statement is nothing short of bullying and scaremongering. It is an insult to the people who are struggling to pay bills, mortgages, to put food on the table, to make ends meet as a result of austere budgets already imposed on them.

“People should not be bullied by the Government. They should assess the treaty on its content and implications for Ireland and on May 31 vote accordingly.”
