The increased cash boost to the coffers of Mayo GAA will not be as big as hoped for following the poor attendance figures at both the league semi-final and final. “We are still waiting on the money to be shared out, but it won’t be a big as we would have hoped for,” county board secretary Kevin O’Toole told the Mayo Advertiser this week. “The dividend will be split between the four teams each day involved and with the numbers that came along it won’t be what we would have hoped for. It’s like the club championship here, the less people that come along the less that comes in.”
In other news the county board had a competitions control committee met on Wednesday night; at that meeting O’Toole confirmed the first round of the championship will take place on the weekend of May 26 and 27 and “we will have three rounds of league games before that”. As to having a doubling up of games over a weekend, no decision has been made on that yet according to O’Toole. “We raised the issue with the clubs at the last county board meeting, but there has been no decision yet. It is very hard to give a firm commitment, because we don’t know what will happen with Mayo in the championship, we expect them to be successful and that will bring it’s own problems in club fixtures. But it’s something we will have to make a decision on in the future.”
