Planning for smart cities and regions of the future

The Ryan Institute for Environmental, Marine and Energy Research in collaboration with the College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway is hosting a one-day conference for public and private sector planners, decision makers, engineers, technology entrepreneurs, SMEs and start ups on ‘Planning for smart cities and regions of the future’.

This free event will take place on Friday May 4 between 10am and 4pm at the Engineering Building, NUI Galway. Leaders in the field will explore the future challenges and opportunities facing planners, developers and technologists, emerging from the development of smart cities and regions.

Speakers include: Dr Emanuele Ragnoli (IBM ); Adam Grennan (CISCO ); Dr Mike Hartnett (Civil Engineering, NUI Galway ); Dr Jim Duggan (Information Technology, NUI Galway ); Dr Marcus Keane (Civil Engineering, NUI Galway ); Dr Barbara Fogarty (Marine Institute ); and Dr Kevin Leyden (CISC, NUI Galway ). Attendees will also benefit from insights from research currently being conducted at NUI Galway.

Dean of engineering and informatics, Professor Gerry Lyons, explained: “This conference should raise awareness about the potential for new planning and modelling capabilities and highlight the opportunities created for engineering and computing in developing smart regions of the future. This is particularly important for a peripheral region such as the West of Ireland, with its unique mix of coastal communities and relatively small urban centres. I would encourage public and private sector stakeholders to avail of this excellent opportunity to begin the public discourse about the impact of these developments on our region.”

This event will assemble the diverse perspectives needed in regional planning, including marine and water resources, the built environment, energy infrastructure, communications and ICT capabilities, as well as the modelling techniques becoming available to support better long-term and emergency response planning.

The conference is sponsored by IBM and the IT Association Galway (ITAG ). For more information please contact Ena Brophy 091-492664. Places are limited please visit www.conference.ie to register online.
