Mulranny on way to becoming the ‘number one’ village in the country

The third village design statement for the county, that of the Mulranny Village Design Statement, was launched on Monday in the village by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who said the design statement will enable Mulranny to become the “number one” village in the country.

The design statement for the picturesque village, which involved input from the local community, was developed in order to “preserve and enhance its natural environment and it will be a great place to live, work, and visit with an enterprising and organised community.” The statement, which was prepared by the county council in partnership with the Heritage Council, will ensure that “future development is responsive to the villages distinctive character and has regard to its surrounding landscape and ecology.”

Objectives in the plan include creating a definitive village centre, new commercial developments, the provision of pedestrian crossings in the village, traffic calming measures, and the opportunity for a promenade on the sea side of the village.

An Taoiseach said that this is a “brilliant opportunity” to enhance the village and is a great example of what communities can achieve. County manager Peter Hynes said that the document was prepared in-house and he complimented the leadership shown by “an exceptional” heritage officer, Deirdre Cunningham.

Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Austin Francis O’Malley, said that Mulranny is one of the most “attractive communities” in the county and that the design statement “will help to protect and enhance the heritage of the village”.

Conor Newman, chair of the Heritage Council said that the local community is “an inspiration to us” as “it’s all about pulling together.”

Sean Carolan, the PRO of Mulranny Community Futures Group welcomed the “absolutely fantastic” design statement and is “looking forward with confidence in implementing the projects and policies.”
