While most attention will be on the goings on in Croke Park on Sunday afternoon, there is one other major knock out league game going on involving Mayo at more or less the same time.
Fr Mike Murphy’s Mayo ladies’ side have made their way through the league stages of division one unbeaten to the top spot on the table and a place in Sunday’s semi-final. Mayo will be making the trip to Birr on Sunday, where like their male counterparts Kerry will be the opposition, but unlike the men they will go into the game as favourites. When the same two sides met the day after St Patrick’s Day in Claremorris it was Mayo who came out on top by 1-9 to 1-7. The only points that Mayo dropped in the whole league run were away to Fermanagh at the start of March when they were held to a 2-11 to 1-14 draw by the Ulster ladies.
While they came fourth in the table the ladies from the Kingdom will be no pushovers, having run Mayo to two points in the league stages of the competition and having made it into the final rounds of the All Ireland championship over the past couple of years also. If Mayo manage to overcome the ladies from the Kingdom on Sunday, the winners of the meeting between Clare and Galway will be waiting for them in the division two final, which will take place as part of a triple header in Parnell Park in Dublin on Saturday May 12.
