Closure of garda stations will not affect policing

Superintendent of Westport, Aidan Foley said that the closure of rural Garda stations in the area “will not have an impact on the level of policing.”

The superintendent was responding to a question put to him by Councillor Christy Hyland at the Westport Joint Policing Committee meeting about the closing of rural Garda stations. Supt Foley said that that even though stations were closed in the county that the same amount of gardaí are still located in the different areas. He also said that he hopes to expand community alert schemes in Westport, “As community alert is one of my priorities.”

Cllr Myles Staunton said that the “basic administration of justice” is also being affected with the closure of courts in the district and he said that if the Westport court is to be closed that “this will be strongly resisted”.
