Sinn Féin Councillor, Thérèse Ruane, has described the Addergoole 14 reenactment of their journey by pony and trap to Castlebar on Easter Sunday as a very moving experience.
“I am delighted that, despite the rain, so many people came out to welcome the Addergoole community and accompany them in their final part of the journey to Castlebar Railway Station. It was a very moving experience when you consider their fate on the Titanic a short time after this journey.
“The reenactment of the journey through Castlebar included two stops at Mrs Walsh's Hardware shop/pub (now Eclipse Hair Salon ) on Linenhall Street and at Thomas Durkan's on Main Street (now Leo Doherty's ) where tickets for the Titanic were bought by the Addergoole 14. Special credit must go to Mayo Arts Squad who obviously put in trojan work in designing and building the facades of the two shopfronts as they would have been in 2012 making the journey in the pony and trap all the more real and poignant.
“I am particularly delighted that my proposal to unveil a bilingual plaque in their memory at Castlebar Railway Station was taken on board. This was a very fitting tribute to their memory and will remind travellers of the Addergoole 14 and indeed of all the emigrants through the generations who have passed through Castlebar Railway Station on their way to build new lives in others parts of the world.
“I would encourage people to go along and support the remaining events organised this week by the Addergoole Titanic Committee”, stated Cllr Ruane.
