Castlebar Celtic’s appeal to the Connacht FA over the Mayo League’s decision to close the €600,000 Rival Arena to adult football was won by the club on Wednesday night. Celtic PRO Noel Coll said yesterday, “The club is happy that the appeal was successful and we’re just looking to put this behind us and get on with what we are here to do and that’s run a football club. We just want to move on and get back to playing football.”
Charity Shield kicks off new season
The Mayo League will kick back into action on Saturday evening when the Mayo League Charity Shield between league champions Castlebar Celtic and cup winners Iorras Aontaithe meet in Milebush Park. The game will kick off at 6pm, with the league proper slated to start the weekend after. Admission to the game is €5 and all money collected will go to a local worthy benefit fund. There will also be a half time draw for two premium level tickets for Ireland’s next home game at the Avivia Stadium and everyone who comes to the game will be automatically entered into that draw.
Westport back in Connacht final after 25 year gap
There was plenty to celebrate in Ballinasloe last Sunday for the large number of Covies who made the trip to the south Galway town as Westport United saw off their hosts to reach their first Connacht Junior Cup final in a quarter of a century. The vital goal was scored with little over half an hour to go when Pat Fitzgerald slotted the ball to the back of the net after he was played in by David Hoban, following a move started by Austin O’Malley at the back. That win now puts Westport into the final where they will play either Mervue or Athenry in Terryland Park on Sunday May 13.
Celtic see off Rovers in pre-season friendly
With the start of their league defence only a week or so away and the season opener Charity Shield tomorrow, Castlebar Celtic continued their tweaking ahead of the start of the season with a 2-1 win over Sligo Rovers in Celtic Park during the week. Celtic went behind with 20 minutes to go, but goals from Chris Rowland and own goal from Marty Owens near the end saw Celtic home to an encouraging win.
Trap and the Taoiseach confirmed for end of the month
It was confirmed this week that Giovanni Trapattoni and Marco Tardelli will pay a visit to Croagh Patrick on April 28. They will join An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny to take part in his charity fundraising initiative. Proceeds from the initiative will benefit Mayo Mountain Rescue, the John Giles Foundation, Mayo and Roscommon Hospice, the Western Alzheimer’s Association and the Western Care Association.
Participants will be urged to wear green and will be able to make a €20 donation to support the five named charities, the walk will depart from Murrisk at midday on April 28 and Giovanni Trapattoni and Marco Tardelli will be there on the day to send off An Taoiseach and the Green Army on their trek.
