Sinn Féin councillor, and chairperson of Smart Travel Castlebar, Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the placing of cycle stands in the centre of Castlebar as another step in the right direction towards making Castlebar a cycle-friendly town.
Cllr Ruane said: “We've been a long time waiting for the placing of bicycle stands in the centre of town. I have consistently raised this at council level and it's very welcome that the cycle stands are now in place at Ellison Street and Castle Street. I look forward to stands at the third location, as promised, at the junction with Linenhall Street and Bridge Street, being in place shortly.
“This is all part of making Castlebar a more cycle-friendly town. We've seen great developments in terms of cycle lanes and infrastructure. We still have a long way to go and there are plans in the pipeline for more cycle parking and more cycle lanes which will go further in linking the different parts of Castlebar with a cycling network. Of course, once Castlebar is linked with the Western Greenway, Castlebar will be a real cycling hub and cycle friendly town.
“We've also seen great progress in pedestrian crossings and making Castlebar a more accessible town for pedestrians. Smart Travel Castlebar will continue to work with the local authorities to make Castlebar a more accessible town for pedestrians and cyclists and make our town a better town for everyone to live and work.”
