League start date put off a week

The Mayo league announced last week that it has put back the start date of this year’s Mayo League due to “circumstances beyond our control”. A statement issued by the league last weekend said: “Due to circumstances beyond our control the Mayo Football League have decided to delay the start of the 2012 season by one week, therefore the opening match of our 2012 season will take place on Saturday, April 7, in Milebush Park with the Charity Shield.

“The first round of all divisions will commence on the weekend of April 14/15,” the statement continued. “The Mayo Football League apologises to all clubs for any inconvenience caused by the delay in starting the season and hopes that this decision will not cause undue disruption to clubs’ preparations for the new season.”

Westport United gearing up for junior cup semi-final

Westport United will be looking to make it back to the Connacht Junior Cup final for the first time in a quarter of a century on Sunday. They will be making the long trip to south Galway to take on Ballinasloe Town at 8pm. The Covies, under the guidance of James Fahy and Kieran Mulchrone, will face a tough battle against a fancied Ballinasloe side on their own patch.

Mayo League go down to Finn Harps in league cup

An inexperienced Mayo League side made the trip to Finn Park last Monday night for the first round of the EA Sports League Cup. However the League of Ireland side proved to be too strong, winning 2-0 on the night. Harps went into the lead after seven minutes when Derek Reilly was unfortunate to put the ball into his own net. Mayo held out again until just after the start of second half when Kevin McHugh grabbed his side’s second goal.

Ballinrobe Town presentation night

Ballinrobe Town AFC will be holding its annual underage presentation night on Friday March 30 in Ballinrobe Community School at 7pm where among other awards the u12 and u15 league winning teams will receive their medals. The clubs adult presentation night for the junior men’s and ladies’ teams will also be held on the same night in Inchs bar at 9.30pm.

Ballina Town final registration night

Ballina Town will hold its last registration night for 2012 season on Tuesday, April 3, in the clubhouse from 7pm to 8pm. Anyone who is interested in playing soccer this season needs to register, places are limited. New applicants need to bring their birth cert. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to register. Both girls and boys are welcome.
