St Gerald’s College Music Department recently staged their second spring recital in the Linenhall Arts Centre. Following the success of last year in the school, it was thought to move to a proper concert setting of the Linenhall Arts Centre. Some 60 sang, played, and danced to a full house.
The senior choir opened the night’s entertainment, and this was followed by all the junior music students which included a recorder sextet, grúpa ceoil, solo singers, solo pianists, solo clarinettist, Irish dancing and a junior ensemble.
The senior students followed with a mixture of bands such as Scale 3 and The Copyrighters and the fifth year music class. There were also a number of solo performers, duets and trios who performed on the night.
The art department in St Gerald’s is a vibrant environment with ongoing projects in a variety of crafts such as printmaking, clay modelling, and puppetry. On exhibition in the Linenhall Arts Centre are examples of lino printing from first year through to fifth year on a number of themes ranging from the local school environment to aspects of the local church and views of the town of Castlebar. There is also a presentation of abstract images from the TY class. Also on show in the exhibition which is still running in the Linenhall are examples of TY students’ collaged self-portraits using silhouettes and a colourful group triptych. Special thanks to all in the Linenhall especially Oisín, Jennifer Hiney the music teacher, and Jean Bourke the art teacher.
