The elected members of Ballina Town Council want to see an end to the erecting of illegal signposting by businesses in the town on a Friday evening which are then removed again on a Sunday.
The issue was raised by Cllr Mary Kelly who told the meeting, that from around Christmas to a few weeks ago, every Friday evening a local person erected a signpost advertising a house for sale on a lamppost right outside the front door of the council offices. She told the meeting it was put up after the council had closed for business on a Friday evening and taken back down again on a Sunday night before the council opened on a Monday.
Cllr Gerry Ginty told the meeting he would fully support Cllr Kelly calling for action to be taken on this issue. “It’s not just the one sign that Cllr Kelly is talking about, but there is a small band of people who are doing it elsewhere every weekend,” he said. “They know the council resources are stretched and it’s not possible to get people out at the weekend to deal with the problem. I can understand all the same in the current economic situation people are desperate to get what ever bit of business they can.”
Town clerk Carmel Murphy told the meeting that the sign that Cllr Kelly referred to had been dealt with by the council and removed by them. She said new draft litter bye-laws were on her desk at the moment and they would deal with this type of problem. Cllr Johnny O’Malley welcomed the news that the new bye laws were nearing completion and asked that before they came before the council a workshop meeting could be held between the councillors and the council management to go through them.
